GOLDSTEIN, LEON, W. WALTER OPPELT, AND THOMAS I-I. MAREN. Osmotic reguhtiun and urea metabolism in the lemon shark Negaprion brenirostris. Am. J. Physiol. 21516) : 1493-1497. 1968. -Lemon sharks Negaprion breuirostris were transferred gradually (within I wk) f rom full. to approximately half-strength seawater. Steady-state conditions (with respect to solute and water balance) were established by the end of the dilution program. The sharks were then maintained in the dilute environment for an additional week. A control group was maintained in seawater. Hematocrits of the fish in dilute seawater were similar to those in the control group, suggesting that the sharks in the dilute environment maintained water balance. Plasma urea, trimethylamine oxide, and chloride concentrations were reduced 55, 60, and 20y0, respectively, in the sharks in diluted seawater compared to the control group. Urea clearance from the body fluids was approximately three times greater in the group in diluted seawater compared to the controls. The rates of total urea excretion in the steady state (equal to urea production) were similar in the two groups. These results suggest that lemon sharks adapt to environmental dilution by reducing the concentrations of the major extracellular solutes-urea, NaCI, and trimethylamine oxide. The reduction in urea concentration is due mainly to an increase in urea clearance and not a change in biosynthesis under these conditions.

Reconstruction of parental microsatellite genotypes reveals female polyandry and philopatry in the lemon shark, Negaprion brevirostris.
Because sharks possess an unusual suite of reproductive characteristics, including internal fertilization, sperm storage, relatively low fecundity, and reproductive modes that range from oviparity to viviparity, they can provide important insight into the evolution of mating systems and sexual selection. Yet, to date, few studies have characterized behavioral and genetic mating systems in natur...
متن کاملGlobal phylogeography and seascape genetics of the lemon sharks (genus Negaprion).
Seascapes are complex environments, and populations are often isolated by factors other than distance. Here we investigate the role of coastal habitat preference and philopatry in shaping the distribution and population structure of lemon sharks. The genus Negaprion comprises the amphiatlantic lemon shark (N. brevirostris), with a relict population in the eastern Pacific, and its Indo-West Paci...
متن کاملLong-term natal site-fidelity by immature lemon sharks (Negaprion brevirostris) at a subtropical island.
Although many sharks begin their life confined in nursery habitats, it is unknown how rapidly they disperse away from their natal area once they leave the nursery. We examine this issue in immature lemon sharks (Negaprion brevirostris) from the time they leave the nursery (approximately age 3) at a subtropical island (Bimini, Bahamas), through to the onset of sexual maturity (approximately age ...
متن کاملRefractive state and accommodation in the eyes of free-swimming versus restrained juvenile lemon sharks (Negaprion brevirostris)
Optical measurements of the refractive state of the eyes of various shark species typically have depicted sharks as hyperopic (far-sighted) with little evidence of accommodation (i.e. the ability to change focus for visualizing objects at different distances from the eye). In this study, we used infrared video retinoscopy to measure the refractive state in juvenile lemon sharks (Negaprion brevi...
متن کاملRegional-Scale Migrations and Habitat Use of Juvenile Lemon Sharks (Negaprion brevirostris) in the US South Atlantic
Resolving the geographic extent and timing of coastal shark migrations, as well as their environmental cues, is essential for refining shark management strategies in anticipation of increasing anthropogenic stressors to coastal ecosystems. We employed a regional-scale passive acoustic telemetry array encompassing 300 km of the east Florida coast to assess what factors influence site fidelity of...
